Gov. Heineman Welcomes New Leader at Grand Island Veterans' Home

Gov. Dave Heineman was joined by John Hilgert, Director of the Division of Veterans' Homes, in announcing a new administrator for one of Nebraska's veterans' homes.

Alexander Willford will begin on July 6 as administrator of the Grand Island Veterans' Home. The facility is home to more than 200 veterans and has a staff of 320 people.

"Alex Willford has a strong record of performance and his years in this field have helped him develop exceptional leadership skills," Gov. Heineman said. "We are committed to strengthening the services for Nebraska veterans and I know he will work hard to ensure quality services for Grand Island Veterans' Home members."

Since 2002, Willford has been Director of Post Acute Services at the Fremont Area Medical Center, a 162-bed long-term care facility, where he is responsible for operations of home health and hospice services. From 1996 to 2002, he was a project director leading numerous assisted living and adult development projects for Beverly Enterprises in Fort Smith, Ark. Prior to that, Wilford was regional director of operations overseeing 10 facilities for Lantis Enterprises in Spearfish, S.D. where he worked from 1987 to 1996.

Hilgert said, "I look forward to having Alex join our team. He is experienced in providing a wide range of services, including assisted living, skilled nursing care, Alzheimer's care, home health, rehabilitation therapy, and hospice care."

Willford has a degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He is both a licensed nursing home administrator and a certified assisted living administrator in Nebraska. He has also been a volunteer fireman and emergency medical technician, as well as a private pilot.

The state's four veterans' homes are operated by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, and are located in Grand Island, Norfolk, Bellevue, and Scottsbluff.
